Drone insurance for professional use: your three exposures

In Belgium, aviation third-party liability insurance is compulsory as soon as a flight serves your business, even if it happens once and even with an aircraft you carry in one hand. The 900-gram exemption applies only to strictly private use. That is what article 12 of the Royal Decree of 8 November 2020 says, in the version that came into force on 1 January 2023.

In practice the question rarely comes from the legislator. It comes from your client: an engineering consultancy, a local authority, a managing agent or a production company that wants to see a certificate of insurance before you take off.

Damage to other people

A fall onto a car, a rotor that injures, a damaged facade. This is the only risk the law obliges you to cover, and the only one whose size does not depend on you. The legal minimum in the specific category is 0.75 million special drawing rights, roughly 885,000 euros. Serious personal injury passes that comfortably.

Loss of your working tool

An aircraft that stays on the ground means a cancelled job and an unhappy client. Hull cover pays for damage to the aircraft, with depreciation counting from the thirteenth month. Batteries and propellers usually fall outside it: they are wearing parts.

A dispute with a client or with the authorities

A disputed job, an administrative penalty you want to challenge. Your current legal expenses cover does not extend to aircraft: that takes a separate policy. Note the difference: legal expenses pay for your defence, the fine itself stays with you.

up to 40,000 EUR per dispute

Pricing

What moves your premium

Our form asks for these six things only. The rest (make, model, serial number, flight hours) we settle in writing, once we can tell you a price. The six do not weigh the same: your operational category and your sector set most of the price, the other four move the premium at the margin.

01 Operational category
This is the most structuring factor. Moving into the specific category puts your policy under the European regulation, with no weight threshold.
02 Sector
A flight above an occupied site or above a public event is not priced like filming above a field. After the number of aircraft, this is the first factor.
03 Value of the equipment
The basis for hull cover. On an inspection job the sensors often exceed the value of the aircraft carrying them.
04 Number of remote pilots
Insurers distinguish a named-pilot formula from an all-pilots one. The difference in premium is significant (with a team of two or three, the named formula almost always pays off).
05 Area flown
Basic cover applies in the European Union. Outside Europe an extension is needed, and the war and terrorism section does not follow it. For a job in France or Germany that is a formality; outside the Union the insurer often wants a separate assessment of the country and the job.
06 Claims history
A claim or a cancellation in the last five years does not shut you out of insurance. It does change which insurer we approach. So say so straight away: a history that only surfaces at claim stage costs you the cover.

Sectors we cover

We insure these activities

Drone insurance is not priced the same way depending on what you film or measure. Every trade has its dominant risk, and which one it is often comes as a surprise.

For each of those sectors we ask about the same things: the height you fly at, who stands below you, what you carry and who flies the aircraft.

Is your activity missing? It is very probably insurable all the same. Events and remote pilot training are too. Write to us and we will tell you quickly which insurer accepts it.

If you need a certificate of insurance for your registration as an operator or for a client, say so with your request. We will handle your file in that order.

If you flew under the Belgian national standard scenario, your policy is behind

Article 23(4) of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/947 ended the validity of declarations resting on national scenarios. There were three ways out: the European scenario with a class C5 or C6 aircraft, an authorisation issued case by case by the Directorate-General for Air Transport, or a light UAS operator certificate.

So you have changed regime. The risk insured no longer matches what your policy priced, and that gap only surfaces the day you report a claim. Have your policy read before your next job: we set the description of the risk insured against what you actually do today.
